SDHIMA Article – AHIMA Ballot

Greetings SDHIMA Members,

It is an exciting time of year for our SDHIMA membership! The board is working to transition in new leadership and is preparing for a successful 2019-2020 year. If you are interested in volunteering, now is the time to contact a board member and get involved. I’ve enjoyed serving SDHIMA as the 2018-2019 President and look forward to Kristin Molitor leading the association throughout the upcoming year! As we transition leadership, the SDHIMA Boards wants to inform you about concerns being voiced bout the 2019 AHIMA election and slate of candidates for our national leaders.

You may have noticed the AHIMA ballot looks different this year – the AHIMA Nominating Committee provided only one candidate for two important leadership roles: AHIMA President-elect role and House of Delegates Speaker-elect. This action by the AHIMA Nominating Committee created concerns and active discussions in the Engage community, amongst our Component State Associations (CSAs), and the House of Delegates. CSAs are taking a variety of approaches in communicating and encouraging action with their membership. As a SDHIMA Board, we recognize and respect that voting in the AHIMA election is a personal choice, which is best guided by your own thoughts and opinions on who will best lead our national association.

It is of critical importance that you take time to educate yourself on the concerns being discussed. Below are links to various discussions, articles, and communications that provide opinions and information. It is important that our members eligible to vote review the information and determine how to proceed, keeping the overall mission of AHIMA and the HIM profession at heart.

The AHIMA 2019 Election will take place from 8 a.m. CT on July 8, 2019 to 5 p.m. CT July 22, 2019.
